Rising 828 metres above Dubai, the Burj Khalifa has been the world's tallest structure since it opened in January 2010. Its Y-shaped, buttressed-core design reduces wind forces and gives the tower its distinctive spiralling silhouette.
Facts
It has more than 160 floors, and its high-speed lifts travel at up to around 10 metres per second. The design was led by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill.
