The Channel Tunnel

A 50 km undersea rail link joining England and France, opened in 1994.

The Channel Tunnel runs about 50 kilometres between Folkestone and Coquelles, with roughly 38 kilometres under the sea. It carries Eurostar passenger trains, Le Shuttle vehicle trains and freight.

A joint effort

Boring crews started from both coasts and met in the middle in 1990 with remarkable precision. The tunnel opened in 1994 and cut London to Paris travel to around two and a half hours.
