Large Hadron Collider

The world's most powerful particle accelerator, a 27 km ring beneath the France–Switzerland border.

Operated by CERN near Geneva, the LHC is a 27-kilometre ring of superconducting magnets buried about 100 metres underground. Proton beams are accelerated to nearly the speed of light and smashed together.

Discovery

In 2012 the ATLAS and CMS experiments announced the discovery of the Higgs boson, confirming a key piece of the Standard Model of particle physics.
