Three Gorges Dam

The world's largest power station by installed capacity, spanning the Yangtze River in China.

Completed in 2012, the Three Gorges Dam on China's Yangtze River is a gravity dam about 2.3 kilometres long. Its hydroelectric station has an installed capacity of 22.5 gigawatts, the largest of any power plant.

Why it matters

The dam provides flood control, clean electricity and improved river navigation, though it also displaced well over a million people and remains debated for its environmental impact.
